Goa is well connected by airline services to most major cities in India. All flights, national and international, to and from Goa, operate from the Goa Airport at Dabolim near the port town of Vasco-da-Gama.

The airport is about 30 kms from the capital city of Panaji and is owned by the Indian Navy. Major airline operators such as Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines, Spice Jet, Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines have flights carrying passengers and cargo in and out of Goa. Besides these, a number of chartered flights land in Goa from UK and other European countries. The national airline Air India also lands a few international flights, especially from the Gulf countries.

It is advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially during the high peak tourist season of October to January when most flights run full. It is also essential to re-confirm your flight timings at least 24 hours before departure.

Most major international airlines usually have agreements with one or more of their domestic counterparts in India, so if you are arriving from abroad it is possible to book your onward domestic flight at the same time as you pay for your international ticket.

Overview

The number of charter flights headed to Goa is increasing every year. The vast majority come from the UK, and Russians are heading over in steadily increasing numbers. You can fly direct to Goa from the UK on a seat-only charter flight or on a package trip that includes accommodation. The latter can be great value but cuts back your flexibility to relocate to a different beach or hotel. Be aware that it is illegal to enter on a scheduled flight and out on a charter flight, and vice versa: if you enter on a charter flight, you must also leave on one.

Dabolim Airport (GOI; 2540806; apdgoa_aai@satyam .net.in, apdgoa_aai@sify.net.in), Goa's only domestic and international airport, is in Dabolim, just outside Vasco-da-Gama. It's also known as Goa Airport. Recent years have seen an increase in the number of new domestic airlines (such as Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet), which has upped competition. Online booking is relatively simple and reliable, but flights to/from Goa fill up fast between December and February.

The 760km (465mi) Konkan Railway opened in January 1998 linking Mumbai with Goa (10 hours) and south to Mangalore (15 hours), dramatically cutting travel times along the western coast. Private companies still offer the dreaded super deluxe video buses from Panaji and Margao to Mumbai (15 hours), Mysore (16 hours) and Bangalore.
